Mailing list FAQ

The short version of how roles, subscriptions, and delivery work.

What is the difference between a member, nonmember, and owner?

Members are subscribed to the list and can receive its mail according to their delivery settings.

Nonmembers are known to Mailman but are not subscribed. Lists use nonmember records mainly to decide whether mail from outside senders should be accepted, held, rejected, or discarded. This is usefull if you are using this list to subscribe to external websites and services.

Owners manage the list, its settings, and its people. Being an owner does not automatically subscribe that address to list mail; add the owner as a member too if they should receive messages.

What do the delivery methods mean?

  • Individual messages: receive each post as its own email.
  • Plain-text digest: receive several posts bundled into one plain-text email.
  • MIME digest: receive a bundle that preserves each original post as a separate message attachment.
  • Summary digest: receive Mailman's compact digest option when it is available for the list.

Turning delivery off pauses list mail without removing your subscription.

How do I join a list?

Open the Directory, choose a list, and select Join this list. The list may subscribe you immediately or require email confirmation, owner approval, or both.

Private or unadvertised lists may not appear in the directory. Ask a list owner to subscribe you.

How does an owner subscribe someone?

Open My lists, select the list, then use its people controls to add a member by name and email. Use bulk add for several addresses at once.

Only subscribe people who expect to receive the list. Add an address as an owner only when that person should administer the list.

How do I change delivery or leave?

Open the list from My lists. Under Your delivery, choose a delivery method, pause delivery, or leave the list.

Why was a message held?

Each list has rules for messages from members and nonmembers. A message can be held because the sender is not subscribed, the destination was implicit, the message was too large, or another moderation rule matched. An owner or moderator can review the reason and accept, reject, or discard it.
